In partnership with City and Guilds Group companies, we are recruiting determined individuals to apply for a 13-month Rail Engineering Operative Apprenticeship. The programme has been designed to ensure that apprentices will receive industry specific training to enable them to be introduced into the working rail sector whilst utilising their skillset.

You will achieve a Level 2 in Rail Engineering Competence and a Level 2 in Rail Engineering Technical Knowledge. If you do not hold a Level 2 in Maths and English, you will be expected to achieve, or work towards this in your programme.

Rail Engineering Operatives provide support to Rail Technicians and Engineers on the entire railway infrastructure, such as: track, electrification, overhead lines and signalling. Those working within the occupation of Rail Engineering are responsible for the safe construction, installation, maintenance and renewal of the railway.

You will receive the following rail competencies and training:

  • PTS AC, DCCR, Track Induction, OLEC 1, Lookout
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • Small Plant and Equipment including; Rail Saw, Generator, Hand Trolley, Impact Wrench, Cembre Rail Drill, CBX, Cobra TT, Robel Tamper, Iron man, Hand Tools
  • Additional plant and upskilling may be provided dependent on role

To be eligible you must be 18+, be able to demonstrate a basic ability with Maths and English, be passionate about engineering and the rail industry. A UK Driving Licence desirable.

You will be contracted for a minimum of 30 hours per week, which will be split between training and working on site. As part of your apprenticeship, you will be contracted to work unsociable hours including nights and weekends for ISS.
